Day 1 -2: Arrival in Quito and Orientation
Since most international flights arrive late at night, we will stay at a hotel just South of Quito for two nights. We will have breakfast and dinner together as a group. Days are free for relaxing, hiking and horseback riding.
Day 3: Travel to Puyo via Baños
After breakfast, we will begin our journey by driving south on the “Avenue of the Volcanoes”. Along this highway, we will see some of Ecuador’s most impressive and majestic volcanoes. We will descend form Quito at 9000’ elevation to the edge of the Amazon Rainforest at 400′ elevation. Along the way, we will see many waterfalls and watch the environment transform from high altitude mountains to cloud forest and, finally, into jungle. We will stop for lunch in the beautiful town of Baños and stay overnight at a hotel in Puyo.
Day 4-10: Amazon Jungle and Sapara Community
Weather permitting, we will take a small plane from the town of Shell into the Sapara community of Llanchamacocha . The flight is about 30 minutes. We will stay at the Naku camp with the Sapara for eight days. Activities during the eight days include dream interpretations and sharing, cleansing and healing ceremonies, jungle hikes, nature walks, camping, swimming, canoe rides, journal writing and cultural exchange. There is lots of time for journaling, rest and reflection.
Day 11-12: Flight back to Shell and Relaxing in the Cloud Forest
In the morning we will have breakfast, pack up our things and say our goodbyes to the Sapara people. Depending on the weather, we will fly back to Shell. A bus will take us to a comfortable, remote hotel in the cloud forest outside of Baños. Here we will spend two more days and nights relaxing and contemplating our recent experiences. This time allows us to gently transition from the time and pace of the jungle life back into our own lives.
Day 13: Trip back to Quito
We will return to Quito, where we will say our goodbyes to our group members. Some of us will fly back home and others may stay longer to visit other parts of Ecuador or the Galapagos. Each person is responsible for transport back to the airport. We will help to arrange that at the end of the trip. A taxi costs approximately $100 and can be shared by 3-4 people. Buses also run regularly between Banos and Quito.
